Winning After MidKnight
Welcome back to another season of
Middletown High School Athletics coverage on Winning After Midknight. It’s been
a little while since we’ve had high school sports action on tap but today the
Golf team have their 2nd match (more on the 1st one
below) of the season against South Carroll. Plus, a good number of former
Middletown athletes have been in action with their respective college and
professional teams. We will cover all that and more below as the 2016-2017 athletics
season starts here and it starts now.
- First, a
look back at the only Middletown High School Athletics event in action, the
Golf team’s match on August 17th against Catoctin and Liberty. The
Knights split with Catoctin and Liberty finishing at a 166, 15 shots ahead of
Catoctin’s 181, but 4 shots behind Liberty. (Link)
- Now, we’ll
move to former Middletown athletes in college, starting with Ali Williams (’16)
who’s pre-season with Appalachian State Field Hockey is under way. The
Mountaineers had three contests losing the 1st match to Liberty 11-3
but then taking down Newberry and Limestone, 9-0 and 4-0 respectively. Williams
would tally her first career collegiate goal, albeit unofficially in the 9-0
Newberry win. (Link)
- Middletown
alumni and current Maryland field Hockey Volunteer Assistant Coach Joann
Engestrom saw her Terrapins’ squad take down Temple easily in a 9-1 exhibition
win over Temple.
- Former
Middletown Girl’s Soccer midfielder Emma Nehausan (’14) saw her Grace College
Lancers’ team get their season underway with two exhibition matches against
against Ancilla and Cedarville. No scores were reported.
- In one of
two Middletown athletes to see game action Alizah Johns-Boehme (’15) and her
Villanova Women’s Soccer squad split a weekend set with Delaware and Drexel.
The Wildcats would take down Delaware 3-2 on Friday but then fall to Drexel 3-0
on Sunday. Johns-Boehme would register 28 minutes and 2 shot on goal against
Delaware and play 15 minutes against the Blue Hens. (Link) (Link)
- The other
former Middletown athlete to record game time was Sarah Kovalchick (’15) who
walked on to the Maryland Women’s Soccer team this summer and saw her first two
games as a Terp this weekend. Maryland would lose to TCU 2-1 in overtime and
then tie with Gardner-Webb. (Link)
- Former
Middletown Volleyball head coach Aubrey Pfau (now Director of Volleyball
Operations at UMD) and former Volleyball starter Sam Higgenbothem (junior at
UMD) both had their first action of this season as Maryland Volleyball held
their annual Red-White Scrimmage. (Link)
- Earlier
this summer, former Middletown Baseball player Connor Myers was drafted in the
27th round of the 2016 MLB Amateur Draft by the Chicago Cubs and
since that point he’s been steadily climbing his way up the Cubs minor league
ranks. Myers would spend 5 games in the Arizona League, then get called up to
the Eugene Emeralds for 10 games, with the next and present destination being
the South Bend Cubs of the A-Level Midwest League. (Link)
