Boy's Cross Country: Knights look to stun powerhouses with upset

Winning After MidKnight

MIDDLETOWN-It’s go time for the Middletown High School Knights Boy’s Cross Country team as they’ll get their season underway when they participate in the Seahawk Cross Country Invitational being hosted by South River High School on September 3rd at 9:00 a.m.

It’ll be a good opening season test for the Knights as the lineup that awaits the Knights in South River is a talented line-up that includes private school such as Archbishop Spalding, Bishop McNamara, and St. John’s College and tough public school competition such as the Clarksburg High School Coyotes, the River Hill High School Hawks, and the Westminster High School Owls.

The Knights come into their season opener with a roster that is very much on the young side but also has the possibility to make a deep run this season with most of the Knights non-senior talent coming in a talented junior class that is striving to make their mark on Middletown Cross Country history.

Some of that junior talent includes Marshall Darby, Riley McDermott, and Brennan Straits who are all expected to contribute in big ways for the Knights, with the first opportunity for the Class of 2017 to contribute coming in Edgewater.

This meet will be a new look for the Knights, as even though the Girl’s Cross Country team did participate in this event last year the Boy’s Cross Country team did not and will have to take a quick understanding of this course in order to do well.

But, the course map will provide a challenge for the Knights as it uses a switch in altitude when the course transfers from the main high school campus to the forest behind the high school to test runners to maintain a steady, true pace and not let runners use a flat altitude to try and coast through the race.

Going in to this meet, the Knights would like to take a win but regardless there will be benefits for Middletown as this meet will provide them with a chance to put get some momentum heading into this season and provide their top runners with an ability to get a feel for a top level cross country course.

But, if the Knights can stun the powerhouses and take home an upset it would show just how tough this Middletown team could be.
