Girl's Cross Country: Caldwell wins Seahawk Invitational

Winning After MidKnight

EDGEWATER- It just happened to be another day at the office for Reilly Caldwell. Thankfully for the Middletown High School Knights Girl’s Cross Country team, that day at the office included her winning the Seahawk Invitational and dropping her time in that event from last year by almost two minutes.

It was a banner day for Caldwell as she took the meet in stunning fashion clipping a solid two minutes off her time and beating out the closest runner by 18 seconds, to pick up where she left off in the 2015-2016 season by winning her first event since the 2015 Central Maryland Conference Girl’s Cross Country Championship.

In a field that was loaded with talent the senior Middletown runner started off her season with a bang as Caldwell, cementing her place as one of the top runners in the state, torching the field of 122 runners and setting up what could be her most memorable year as a runner.

While not surprising considering how Caldwell has run in the past year, it was a change from the past as Caldwell did multiple things to break some of her previous results and buck some of her previous trends.

For starters, this was the fastest time that Caldwell had ever run on a 5,000 meter course as she beat her personal record from her 1st place at the 2015 CMC Championship meet putting up an 18:25.30, which was 0:00.20 better than her time from the CMC meet last year.

Caldwell also bucked her best time in season debuts (regardless of whether they were a 5,000 meter course or not) by besting that mark by almost two seconds. Her past two season debuts had both finished around 20 minutes in length with those two being the Seahawk Invitational last year and the Brunswick Invitational in 2014.

And finally, Caldwell also usurped her previous Seahawk Invitational mark as she took that one down by almost two minutes proving that from last year to this year she has improved by a large margin.

It wasn’t a bad day for the Middletown team either as they picked up a 10th place finish out of 17 teams to start their season. Finishing for the Knights in support of Caldwell were Molly Greenblat in 67th place with a 22:23.90, Marylin Fisher in 69th place with a 22:24.70, Sophie Stafford in 75th place with a 22:58.60, and Annushka Aliev in 79th place with a 23:02.70.

Middletown will know head to the 2016 Rebel Invitational at South Hagerstown High School on Saturday September 10th at 9:00 a.m. and Caldwell will be running again. If Caldwell had put up her best time on a three mile course at the Rebel Invitational last year (Middletown did not compete in it last year), she would’ve one the meet by almost 40 seconds.

Caldwell will try to do exactly that in her next day at the office.
