Girl's Soccer: Knights learn lessons from Broadneck loss

Winning After MidKnight

URBANA- The Middletown High School Knights Varsity Girl’s Soccer team knew going in to their contest against the Broadneck High School Bruins that they were going to have their hands full.

The Bruins were a loaded 4A team that won the 4A State Championship last year and on top of that had hardly graduated anyone from that team last year meaning that the Bruins team that the Knights would play on Friday September 2nd was essentially the same Bruins team that had celebrated at the Loyola University of Maryland after clinching a state title.

The Knights would predictably have their struggles against the Bruins falling by a score of 3-0, but it wasn’t all for naught as the Knights were able to show moments of skill and will also get a chance to make up for that in short order as they’ll have to play the Westminster High School Owls just 24 hours after the kickoff of their game against the Bruins.

Middletown’s opening contest of the 2016-2017 season at the Urbana High School Tournament in Urbana, Maryland was always going to be a challenge as the Knights are still a team who are very much trying to find their identity as a team and while the Bruins were the more offensive of the two squads the Knights still had moments where they looked like a team that was moving upwards.

The youthful Knights recorded seven shots in their opening game and managed to hold the Bruins to just three goals in the contest even though Broadneck managed to outshoot the Knights by a 21-7 margin.

The Bruins would jump out to a 2-0 lead at halftime and would add one goal in the second half to get to the 3-0 score line as Bruins striker Lucy Parrott would record a pair of goals for Broadneck while Lela Clark added the other tally.

The good news for Middletown is that they won’t have to wait long to avenge their loss to the Bruins as they will close out their time in the Urbana Tournament when they take on the Owls of Westminster High School, who are coming off a 5-0 loss to Urbana, at 4:00 p.m. on September 3rd.
