Winning After MidKnight
Middletown’s pre-season has been a
relatively easy one as they dispatched the South Carroll High School Cavaliers
with relative ease by a score of 10-5 and then had a good degree of success at
the Oakdale High School Play Day on Saturday, February 14th winning
2 out of the 3 games that they played in the abbreviated scrimmage format.
The goal for Middletown heading into
their showdown with the Hubs will be to get as close to game ready as is
possible with a match-up on Friday, March 20th against the Liberty
High School Lions – their 1st regular season contest looming large
in the mirror.
The Knights will also look to sure up
any position battles that still may be open for grabs during the scrimmage with
the Hubs as not only is their game with the Lions on Friday coming close but
also against one of the tougher teams in Carroll County. To beat the Lions, the
Knights will need a solid performance on defense. The issue with that will be
that the positions have still not been fully decided on defense for Middletown.
Middletown will also benefit from the
scrimmage as it will give them more playing time on turf, something that almost
all the sports teams in Middletown and, probably, to a good degree across the
state will need. As was mentioned in our boys lacrosse season preview, a late
February snow storm wreaked havoc on outdoor fields in Middletown, even the
turf ones, forcing all of the tryouts and a large number of the 1st
practices for Middletown to be pushed indoors.
While practicing inside may be not a
bad option for some sports, it is a bad option for lacrosse as long passes,
defensive and offensive strategies, and lots of aspects of the game in general
cannot be accurately replicated and simulated in the confined spaces of a gym
floor.
As in the case with most scrimmages
the result of the contest between the Knights and the Hubs will be of very
little importance to either team. The importance of the scrimmage from the
Middletown perspective will be if they can sure up their position battles and
if they can be game-ready.
