Golf: Middletown Gets Split Decision With Linganore

Winning After MidKnight

Going into their tri-match against the Linganore High School Lancers and the Williamsport High School Wildcats, the Middletown High School Knights Golf team knew that if they wanted to answer question as to who one of the best golf teams in Frederick County was they’d have to at least beat Linganore.

Middletown, Linganore and Urbana are the top three teams in the county at this point in time and as neither Middletown nor Linganore have gotten the chance to square off against Urbana, this would be the first match of the season in which the top teams could stake their claim to being “elite”.

We’ll have to wait for those questions to be answered, as Middletown and Linganore would tie each other at 166 as the Knights recorded a split decision with a 166-166-203 score as they did pick up a win against Williamsport.

Heading into their match on September 8th the Knights had struggled in their last match as they shot into the 170’s against the Tuscarora Titans and they knew that if they wanted to take down Linganore they would have to play better, even though Maryland National Golf Course is one of the tougher courses in the state of Maryland.

Middletown would shoot well enough to win the match as a 166 on Maryland National is not a bad team score and put the Knights in position to win the match and answer all the questions about if they were one of the top teams in Frederick County. Unfortunately, for the Knights the Lancers were up to answering the questions too as they had the same answer in mind shooting an identical 166.

The top shooters for Middletown were senior Andrew Heon who put up an even par 36 and sophomore Joey Weiland who shot a 42 for the Knights. This was a big day for Heon as he has been trying to get back on track this season after shooting rounds in the upper 30’s.

For most golfers at the high school level, the upper 30’s but Heon has been trying to get his score even lower and he did just that on his home course of Maryland National.

Weiland’s 42 was a solid score for the Knights and was just enough for Middletown as the Knights would need every stroke that they could get to end up in the tie with Linganore.

For the Lancers, they would have Ryan McFadden shoot a 35 for the Lancers while Drew Tillman would shoot a 39 to be the Lancers top scorers.

The questions about who is the better team between Middletown and Linganore would continue to be tossed up in the air as the Knights and Lancers’ performances on Thursday could only be separated by a razor thin margin.

Maybe, this is for the better as it will save some of the excitement for the next time the Lancers and the Knights meet up as the questions about who is the better team will still be there when they head into that match.

That match will carry a little bit more weight too as that will be the Central Maryland Conference Championship at a familiar venue, Maryland National Golf Course.
