Junior Varsity Boy's Soccer: Tapping in to a Developing Offense

By Ben Spector
Winning After MidKnight

The Middletown High School Knights Junior Varsity Boy’s Soccer team is an offensive powerhouse, with a similar depth in scorers compared to that of the Varsity team above them.

The only difference between the Junior Varsity team and the Varsity team is that unlike the Varsity team the Junior Varsity team has not been able to tap into the offensive reserve that they have stored away.

The Knights will look to do just that when they take on the Eastern Tech Mavericks in Baltimore, Maryland at 5:30 p.m. as Middletown will look to tap into an offensive strike that has been seen only a couple times.

By now most people are aware of the absolute offensive assault that the Varsity team has partaken in. But, if you aren’t the Knights have scored thirteen goals over the course of three games and have stunned teams with how fast, physical, and aggressive they play.

But, the Junior Varsity team has some of that aggressive, offensive style in their DNA too, they just haven’t had a chance to show it as their only match so far this year against the Century High School Knights was a defensive battle through and through.

At the end of the match when the Knights begin to sustain attacks and press on defense in an attempt to get Century to break down was when that offensive style of play began to take center stage as sophomores Matthew Barlow and Holden Coblentz both got to show off some attacking play with the latter being awarded for it with a game winning goal.

If the Knights are to take down the Mavericks than they will need to do more of that attacking play that resulted in a goal from Coblentz as if it wasn’t for the moment of brilliance from Coblentz and a couple more sustained attacks, Middletown most likely would’ve ended up with a scoreless draw.

This game against these Mavericks is the perfect opportunity for Middletown to tap into their offense as the Mavericks team has allowed the Knights lots of room to work offensively and allows opponents lots of time to work creatively off the ball with the hopes that they can shut down any build-up play in the final third of the field.

Middletown will have time to perfect their style of play but the Knights have a golden opportunity to tap into their offense early in the season and will not miss the chance if Eastern Tech gives it to them.
