Winning After MidKnight
The
Middletown High School Knights Junior Varsity Field Hockey team may not have
won their game on Tuesday September 6th against the Westminster High
School Owls but for the Knights the game meant something much more important
than a result.
It meant that
the Knights season had officially started and that the Knights were a team for
at least this year, which was a welcome relief considering around two weeks ago
the idea of the Knights even being able to field a JV team was more of a pipe
dream than anything.
When tryouts
rolled around, one thing for the Knights was painfully obvious.
They were
short on the number of players needed to have teams at both levels but if they
didn’t have two teams than they would have one team that was painfully large
which could have been a hindrance for the Varsity players to have to go through
practices and share drills with that big of a group.
Thankfully,
things for Middletown worked out for the better as some more players joined the
team a little bit after the first practice date and with some maneuvering and
work to get the logistics of how things were going to be done in order,
Middletown was able to commit to officially fielding a JV team for the
2016-2017 campaign.
So, when the
Knights took the field on the 6th against the Owls, even though very
few people knew about what had happened for the Knights to reach the point of
having a team, among the few who knew about the situation there was relief.
There was a
sense of excitement and a sense of hope.
The
foundations of the Middletown High School Field Hockey program were still
standing, maybe not as sturdy as they had been before but the bonds were still
there and they looked better than ever.
There was a
game to be played on the other side of the deeper meaning and even though the
Knights lost it by a score of 2-0 to a talented Westminster Owls team the fact
that the Knights with a large number of first year players kept the game that
close is a big deal.
As we’ve
mentioned in earlier articles the Owls are one of the top field hockey programs
in the state so the 2-0 loss is actually a good result for the Knights, albeit
not the one they were hoping for, considering how young their team is.
Regardless of
the result, Middletown was just happy to see another day of JV field hockey.
