Winning After MidKnight
The
Middletown High School Knights Junior Varsity Volleyball team made quick work
of their opposition in Middletown’s season opener as the Knights took down the
Liberty High School Lions 2 sets to 0 (25-17, 25-14).
From the
opening serve of the match it was all Middletown as the Knights would jump out
to a 6-1 lead in the first set and never look back from there forcing the Lions
into making unforced errors on service returns and volleys which gave
Middletown the momentum from the outset of the game yesterday.
At times the
Knights were shaky with communication and mental mistakes, which would usually
be expected from a Junior Varsity volleyball team, but for the most part the
Knights played a clean game making the shots that they had hoped to make and
putting the Lions on the back heel from the outset.
The Lions on
the other hand struggled with return errors and could not dictate the pace of
play that they had hoped to dictate as the errors and mistakes came back to haunt
them from the outset.
Middletown
was in trouble very little during the match with the only time that the Knights
were forced to call a timeout and regroup coming at the 14-12 mark in the
second set. The Knights had amassed a 14-8 lead only to see the Lions slowly
whittle it away with their first real rally of the day and put the Knights in
danger of dropping the set.
It was at
that point that Middletown head coach Brittany Mallot took a timeout and spent
the minute of the timeout giving the Knights an animated lecture with the goal
that the Knights could string together the points to take the second set and
end the match with Liberty in straight sets.
The Knights
would respond to that challenge as after that Middletown would go on an 11-2
run to close out the second set and the match as the Knights breezed to a
victory over the Lions.
