Winning After MidKnight
Our first
full day of high school sports coverage is in the books and it was a crazy one
as multiple teams picked up wins and multiple alumni continued to shine. Today,
we’ll be an even busier day as we start bright and early at 9:00 a.m. so to
pair with that here are the breakfast version of the Knights Notes for
September 3rd.
Yesterday’s News
- The Varsity
Football team started their 43rd season in the most appropriate way,
registering a 43-0 win over the Manchester Valley Mavericks as the Knights
cruised in Carroll County. You can read all about the win here. (Link)
- Also
landing solidly in the win column for Middletown was the Varsity Boy’s Soccer
team who started off their 2016-2017 campaign with a 5-2 win over TJ in the
2016 Sheffler-Ford Tournament. You can read about that win by following this

- The Varsity
Girl’s Soccer team would start their season up against defending 4A State
Champion Broadneck but unfortunately for the Knights they’d end up on the wrong
side of a 3-0 loss. You can read about the loss here. (Link)
- Abigail
Provost (’14) and the Stevenson Field hockey team lost a tight one in their
season opener as they fell to the Lynchburg College Hornets by a score of2-1 in
overtime. Provost would play 39 minutes for the Mustangs but would not record
any statistics. (Link)
- It was a
rough day at the office for Ali Williams (’16) and the Appalachian State Field
Hockey team as they fell to James Madison by a score of 5-1 in Harrisonburg to
bump their losing streak to 3. Williams would get the start for the night but
not register any statistics. (Link)
- Joann
Engestrom, Volunteer Assistant Coach for Maryland Field hockey, saw her Terps
fall to #4 Duke by a score of 1-0 at the Big Ten/ACC Cup in Lancaster,
Pennsylvania. (Link)
- Nick Welch
(’15) and his #23 Salisbury University Football team got their season off on
the right foot taking down #16 Albright, 34-18 on the Eastern Shore. Welch
would play in the Sea Gulls win but not record any statistics. (Link)
- MacKenzie
Noel (’13) and the Salisbury Women’s Soccer team took down Meredith 3-1 in the
SU Classic to pick up a win in their season opener. Noel, who is injured did
not play for the Sea Gulls in the win. (Link)
- It was a
rough one for Alizah Johns-Boehme (’15) and the Villanova Women’s Soccer team
as they fell to #9 Minnesota, by a score of 5-0 at the Duke Nike Classic in
Durham, North Carolina. Johns-Boehme would play 35 minutes in the Wildcats
loss. (Link)
- Sarah Kovalchick
(’14) and the Maryland Women’s Soccer team have had some heartbreaking losses
and their contest against Pepperdine was no different as the Terps lost to the
Waves, 1-0 in overtime. Kovalchick did not play in the Terps’ loss. (Link)
- Sam
Higgenbothem (’14) and Director of Volleyball operations Aubrey Pfau and the
Maryland Volleyball day split on their first day at the Kansas Invitational as
they won 3-1 against Arkansas in the morning game and then fell to #4 Kansas in
straight sets 3-0. In the match against Arkansas, Higgenbothem had 1 set
assist, 2 service errors, 2 return errors, and 8 digs wile in the Kansas match
she had 1 set assist, 1 service return error and 4 digs. (Link) (Link)
- Connor
Myers (’12) and the South Bend Cubs were in a barn burner against the West
Michigan Whitecaps but couldn’t get the bats going, falling 3-0. Myers went 0-3
with two strikeouts in the Cubs’ loss. (Link)
Knight of the Day: We finally have a non-golf Knight of
the Day winner from Middletown Athletics and that honor goes to Middletown
senior halfback Brandon Jones. He went for 113 yards on 9 attempts and 3
touchdowns for Middletown in Varsity Football’s 43-0 win over Manchester
Valley.
Today’s Happenings
- The Boy’s
Cross Country team will start their season bright and early when they head down
to Edgewater for the 2016 Seahawk Cross Country Invitational at 9:00 a.m. It’ll
be an early way for the Knights to start their season and you can read about

- The Girl’s
Cross Country team will follow the boy’s cue and compete in the same Seahawk
Invitational with the opening gun going at 9:00 a.m. also. You can read the

- The Varsity
Boy’s Soccer team will look for their first big win of the season as a win
against the Linganore Lancers will give them the championship of the 2016
Sheffler-Ford Tournament. The Lancers and Knights will kick off at 9:00 a.m. (Link)
- The
Middletown High School Varsity Girl’s Soccer team will look to right their ship
when they take on the Westminster High School Owls in their final game at the
Urbana Tournament at 4:00 p.m. Both the Owls and Knights are 0-1 which will
create a quasi-3rd place game. (Link)
- Brent Leber
(‘15) and the Lipscomb University Men’s Cross Country team will open their
season in Nashville, Tennessee as they participate in the Belmont Opener. The
opening gun will sound at 9:00 a.m. (Link)
- Zach Welch
(’12) and the Monmouth Football team start their 2016-2017 campaign at home as
they will take on Lehigh at 12:30 p.m. (Link)
- The
Middletown duo of Tim Pirrone (’14) and Tim Schumacher (’14) will start their
season of for the Lebanon Valley College Football team as they’ll travel west
to take on Franklin & Marshall College. The Dutchmen get underway from
Lancaster at 1:00 p.m. (Link)
- In the
biggest match-up of the day involving a Middletown alum, #2 Clemson Football
and Justin Falcinelli (’14) will take on Auburn in primetime the small Alabama
town. The game starts at 9:00 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN. (Link)
- Almost all
of the Middletown football alumni are getting seasons underway and Bradley
Rinehart (’14) is no different as his Shepherd Football team will start their
season at 12:00 p.m. taking on West Virginia Wesleyan in a home game for the
Rams. (Link)
- Will
McClain and Maryland Football will have their Opening Day as they’ll take on
Howard University at 12:00 p.m. from College Park. The FBS Bison are big
underdogs as they head to Maryland Stadium. (Link)
- Jace Denham
(’16) and Marquis Lauer (’16) will make their debut with the Frostburg State
Football team as the Bobcats take on Geneva from Bobcat Stadium in Frostburg at
7:00 p.m. (Link)
- The Ambrose
brothers, Jared and Rob who are both on the coaching staff at Towson University
with Rob as the head coach will have their Towson Football season start as they
venture down to Tampa and Raymond James Stadium. The Tigers will be hosted by
South Florida at 7:00 p.m. (Link)
- Clay Smith
(’16) and the Hood College Men’s Soccer team will start their season as they’ll
take on Drew at the Drew Fall Festival at Drew University at 6:00 p.m. (Link)
- Brittany
George (’13) and Erin Scarborough (’16) and the Hood College Women’s Soccer
team will head up to Penn State Harrisburg to take on the Nittany Lions in
Pennsylvania’s capital city at 12:00 p.m. (Link)
- Mackenzie
Noel (’13) and the Salisbury Women’s Soccer team will play against Methodist in
the Salisbury University Classic. The Sea Gulls will kick things off at 4:00

- Emma Neashusan
(’14) and Grace College Women’s Soccer will look to shake their two game losing
streak as they’ll take on Bethel College of Tennessee at 2:00 p.m. (Link)
- Lauren
Neary (’15) and the Washington College Women’s Soccer team will look to pick up
another win as they take on Gwynedd Mercy at 1:00 p.m. (Link)
- Sam
