MIDDLETOWN-The Middletown High School Varsity Girl’s Soccer team will get their 2016-2017 campaign underway with one of their bigger early tests of the season when they take on the defending state champion Broadneck High School Bruins at the Urbana Tournament at 4:00 p.m.

The Knights are a young team and facing a team in the Bruins who dominated 4A in the state of Maryland will be a measuring stick game for Middletown as they look to get their season started with a positive result.

Broadneck has a high paced offense with seven starters from last years team returning, with those starters having scored upwards of 30+ goals for the Bruins during last years’ run to a state championship. Add to the fact that Broadneck returns all of their defensive starters and the Knights look like they’ll be in for quite a challenge on opening day.

To have any chance against the Bruins, the Knights will have to stifle the Broadneck offensive attack and that is where the defense of Middletown will come into play.

Even though they gave up three goals in their scrimmage to Walt Whitman, the Knights back line which consists of seniors like Peyton Weaver and Sarah Hall held the Vikings’ repeated attacks at bay for the most part and if not for a few sneaky goals, the scrimmage could’ve easily been a one goal or two goal game.

Offensively, the Knights will move their offense through a 4-4-2 with the two strikers up front being rotated on a liberal basis, at least early on in the season. Middletown striker Lindsey Brant will almost be guaranteed to be up front for as her speed and creativity on the ball for give Middletown a real dynamic threat up front and will allow Middletown to attempt to generate some offense.

Middletown will need a perfect performance to take down Broadneck but with a little help the Knights could pull of one of the biggest upsets this year on day #1 of the season.
