In our preview of the Middletown High School Knights Golf team’s match against the Boonsboro High School Warriors and the Brunswick High School Railroaders at Black Rock Golf Course (link here) on Wednesday August 24th, the topic that discussed was what lessons the Knights would learn from Black Rock, as that would be home to a much more important event in a month, their District Qualifying Tournament to get them into states.

If Wednesday’s match was any indication, not only did they learn some lessons from the course but they look to be in a position to pass the class with flying colors as they blew past Boonsboro and Brunswick by a score of 157-178-180.

The Knights (3-3) had the match firmly in its’ grasps from the opening tee shot as Middletown’s #1 and #2, sophomore Joey Weiland and senior Andrew Heon both went out and shot rounds under 40 with Weiland carding a two under 34 for a season low while Heon shot a plus four for a 38, which was one shot off of his season low.

The support from the back-of-the-line golfers, especially in the #3 and #4 slots was something that the Knights had been looking for as the team tries to get in shape to qualify for and on Wednesday they got it in droves, as Middletown senior Robbie Hocuk put up a 42 which was his low score of the season. Also, included in the fun for Middletown was Justin Arnold who put up a 43 to round out the Knights score of 157.

That score of 157 is very important for the Knights because it means that if you doubled the score to represent the jump up from nine holes of play in a tr-match to eighteen holes of play in the district tournament than the Knights would score a 314 which in District I would almost certainly qualify the Knights for states which will be the main goal for Middletown when they head back to Black Rock in a month.

The Knights will now head into next week with a little bit of momentum as a match-up against the Westminster High School Owls looms large on Tuesday.
