Winning After MidKnight
To say that
the Middletown High School Knights Junior Varsity Field Hockey team was unlucky
in their game against the Francis Scott Key Eagles would be an understatement.
The upstart
Knights, a team filled with players with little field hockey experience, had a
chance to pick up a win against the Eagles, a Carroll County team with a
historic program but where denied that through no fault of their own as the
Knights had three goals called back.
These three
goals called back had a definitive effect on the game as after that the Knights
couldn’t put a goal in the net once more and would end up finishing the game in
a 0-0 tie with Francis Scott Key, as even though the Knights didn’t win they
did pick up an all important first result against the Eagles.
One of the
goals coming into the game for Middletown was them for them to try and tap into
their offense as they had been shut out during their first game, a 2-0 loss
against Westminster and were still looking to find the team cohesion that would
bring goals with them.
Middletown
would find that cohesion, but unfortunately for them it seemed that no matter
what they did and no matter what they threw at Francis Scott Key, it would
either be that they would be stopped on the attack by the Eagles or when they
finally did put one home against the Eagles that it would be called back for
some reason.
And, it wasn’t
as if the Knights committed infractions on all the goals to wipe them off the
board. One of the goals that came off the board for Middletown, was due to a
Francis Scott Key player wedging her stick in between the legs and tripping a
Middletown forward in mid-shot.
The shot by
Middletown would end up going in the back of the net which usually means that
because the goal was scored by the team who the foul was against, the foul
would be wiped off and Middletown would have a 1-0 lead over the Eagles.
Instead, the
goal was wiped off the board and Middletown would get a penalty stroke but
would not be able to convert leaving the game tied at zero which is where it
would stay.
Still the tie
was an important result for Middletown as the young team looks to get some
momentum going early in the season and a tie against the Eagles, a Carroll
County school, with a large degree of success as a program would be a good way
to do it.
The Knights
have shown that they have a large amount of raw talent during their first two
games of the season, as they have improved infinitely over the course of their
first two games as on both offense and defense, Middletown has shown an
exceptional uptick from where they were at the start of the season.
Middletown,
based on how they’ve played has earned a win and deserve a win. Unfortunately,
they’ll have to wait on even though they shouldn’t have.
